My name is Lucas Gering, and I am a software developer based in Leipzig, Germany. I have more than ten years of experience building enterprise web applications, with a strong focus on e-commerce solutions for the B2B construction and wholesale industries.
Over the past five to six years, I have been responsible for developing and evolving an in-house e-commerce platform for a large wholesale company in the construction and automotive sector. I led the team that rebuilt the existing web shop on the SAP Commerce Cloud middleware. After going live with the webshop in 20+ countries I transitioned our team to a continues product development.
Today we maintain the platform and create/improve features
in a monthly release schedule. We are also in the process of cutting the
monolithic architecture into a micro service landscape and transitioning away
from the middleware to our own solutions while expanding into different
business fields inside our company.
My focus is backend development in the Java ecosystem. I started my career working with Spring and Spring Boot, and over time Micronaut has become my preferred framework for building modern micro services. I work regularly with relational databases, especially PostgreSQL and other members of the SQL family. I heavily lean into event-driven systems rely on Apache Kafka as the backbone for async communication between services.
Outside the Java ecosystem I am familiar with C++ and C#
(with .NET Core). Rust, Go, and Typescript are also part of my skill set but not
daily.
In recent years, my role has shifted a bit. When our team needed somebody that would oversee our increasing need for infrastructure and DevOps, I switched my role to take over that task. I always liked to work on software throughout its lifecycle and into the operations phase of a project. So, it was natural fit for me. This shift has involved managing deployments with Kubernetes, configuring, and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, and implementing monitoring solutions across major cloud providers.
While backend development and DevOps are my main strengths, I also like to build user interfaces for internal tools. Most people underestimate how many support cases a good user interface can prevent. For that I recently shifted from using React with Next.js to Angular to be more aligned with our frontend team.
